About me
I am an Assistant Professor at the School of Government and Public Administration, Universidad Mayor in Santiago, Chile. I am also an Associate Researcher at the Millennium Nucleus for the Study of Political Crises in Latin America (CRISPOL) and a Research Fellow at the V-Dem Regional Center for Latin America. I hold a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
My research is driven by a central question: how can we assess the functioning of democracy through its institutions? This question leads me to examine the incentives that shape the strategic behavior of political actors within complex and evolving institutional frameworks. I specialize in the study of political institutions, with a focus on executive–legislative relations, mechanisms of legislative oversight, and regime transformations in Latin America. In particular, I investigate the role of opposition forces, institutional checks and balances, and the structural conditions that enable—or erode—democratic resilience. My agenda seeks not only to explain institutional design and performance, but also to trace their broader political consequences.

Methodologically, I use a multi-method research strategy that combines quantitative analysis with comparative and qualitative evidence. My work draws on statistical modeling, game theory, Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), archival research, and natural language processing to study legislative processes, institutional rules, and political behavior from complementary perspectives.
My research has appeared in Party Politics, Parliamentary Affairs, Political Research Quarterly, The Journal of Legislative Studies, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, and PS: Political Science & Politics, among other outlets. I have also contributed to Spanish-language editions of the V-Dem Democracy Report and to research projects funded by Chile’s National Agency for Research and Development (ANID).
I was born and raised in Colombia, where I earned a B.A. in Political Science from the Universidad del Tolima. I later completed an M.Res. in Comparative Politics at FLACSO Ecuador, followed by an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Political Science at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. My doctoral dissertation, Oversight of the Executive by the Legislative Opposition in Latin America, was awarded the highest distinction.
